Our office in Turkmenistan
The British Embassy in Ashgabat is lucky in that it is situated in an area of immense historical value. Ashgabat sits on the route of the old Silk Road and is also where the story of 'A thousand and one Arabian nights' originated from.
Apart from the historic setting, it is a very busy Embassy. The Ambassador is supported by 3 other UK based members of staff plus more importantly 10 locally employed office staff. With of course others including drivers, cleaners and security guards.
The Embassy has a focus on two main objectives. These are "Energy Security" and the rather long but important tile of "Respect for Human Rights, the Rule of Law, Good Governance and Political and Social reforms". The Embassy also has a Visa/Consular section to encourage the number of visitors from Turkmenistan to the UK in the fields of education, tourism and business. Although small in number, British Nationals working, visiting or passing through Turkmenistan, can call on the Embassy for Consular assistance.
The Embassy has a large Press and Public Affairs Section which helps to promote all activities of the Embassy and share the good news stories on the Embassy's achievements.
It also has a Projects Section which has a relatively small fund in which to promote and assist in our objectives as noted above.
And lastly it also has a very hard working Management Section which supports the work of all others sections by ensuring they have a proper and appropriate working environment in which to carry out their own internal objectives.
